The
teaching in Bhagavad Gita is a treasure of mankind. The
teaching applies to all fields of life. These are like a practical teaching,
which can be applied to the field as it describes. Nowadays, students are
lacking motivation due to the availability of numerous distractive elements,
which directly affect their study and subsequent career development. Teachings
in Bhagavad Gita provide the way for students to
concentrate on their chosen path. Students can get motivation, guidance,
encouragement, and enthusiasm to achieve their plan, a roadmap to fulfill their
goal, aim, mission, and vision. Students will get the courage to work hard to
fulfill their dream.
- The first chapter of Bhagavad
Gita describes the environment of a classroom. As like as a
battlefield, classrooms can also have many destruction elements. This
classroom can be conducted at any moment in any situation where we may
have the minimum to maximum destruction. Within this situation, a student
needs to take appropriate decision within a very short span of time.
- Bhagavad Gita tells about the characteristics
of the student. The main characteristics of a student
include the eagerness to learn, strive for knowledge,
willingness for hard work to fulfill their aim, goal,
mission, and vision. A student needs to learn from the teacher
wholeheartedly and apply these learning in the appropriate way
in an appropriate situation.
- Not only student, Bhagavad
Gita also specifies the characteristics of a Teacher. A
teacher should have the confidence on the subject and always ready to
answer the student’s queries. The teacher should make sure that the answer
is very much understandable to the student.
- The teaching in Bhagavad
Gita started to motivate Arjuna for the
fight. Arjuna was depressed by thinking about the end
result of the fight, maybe the result is in his favor. Even
with the favorable result, the person is depressed by thinking
the outcome. If the result is not in favor, then, the
person will be more depressed. This is important.
Knowledge: The first step of learning is to do work for
study. Students need to put a lot of effort to score marks and pass the exam.
Many times these efforts are just to pass the exam or score the marks in a
mechanical way. It might have a small term effect but in long-term, its effect
will nullify. If students cannot understand the subject or fail to gather the
knowledge from the subject, he can’t use it later for good. This means studying
without achieving knowledge or learning is not study, it is actually nothing
(Verse 3:28). Study with proper understanding or knowledge is
important. Only reading without understanding is not useful at all
(Verse 3:07). Study with proper understanding helps to keep the wheel of
creation in motion (Verse 3:16). So, what are the ways to improve
knowledge?
Practice: Although learning is the primary duty of a
student, it is often very difficult to concentrate or control the mind. In
practical life, our mind is constantly distracted due to many reasons, due to
which we cannot concentrate and control our mind. For a man in the practical
world who has to fight so many opposing elements, it is certainly very
difficult to control the mind. The mind is restless, turbulent, obstinate,
fickle and very strong, and it is more difficult to subdue it (6:34). Then, how
is it possible to control the mind. The mind can be brought under control with
difficulty by cultivating the favorable attitude in the direction of the
repeated practice of same work (Verse 6:35). Practice makes perfect. Nevertheless,
students should continue to do the work irrespective of the result, means the
preparation should not affect the result.
Detachment from the result: Very often students are falling into depression
if they fail to get the expected result. That affects their hard work,
preparation, and plan. Students should not study with the result being the sole
aim (Verse 2:47). If you make an effort, you may or may not get your expected
result. This has a greater impact on their further preparation. This happens if
we are very much attached or sensitive to the result of the work. The student
should have the expectation and at the same time, they should learn how to
detach themselves from the result. If you do the work with a positive attitude,
you will definitely achieve the goal. It is very difficult to abstain from the
result of study and continue to do the same irrespective of the result towards
the higher goal. For this, students should walk an extra mile or take a greater
care.
Meditation: To gain the power for detachment from the
result or to continue to do the preparation for the larger goal, a student
should follow a certain procedure to control their mind. This can be through
meditation. The mind is both friends of those who control it, and an enemy, for
those who do not control it (Verse 6:06). Meditation can help to control the
mind and force it to work in a disciplined way. Students should practice
meditation every day. By the practice of meditation, students can discipline
their mind, which needs physical strength of body. The physical strength can be
achieved with the help of Yoga, to steady the
mind.
Yoga: Yoga means to concentrate the mind upon
the Supreme by controlling the ever-disturbing senses. Yoga helps
to control the mind through meditation. Students need to elevate their mind and
not degrade it (Verse 6:05). Thus, one needs to control it by performing duties
to enlighten him. This helps one to meditate to control the mind. Through this
practice, the student’s preparation cannot get affected by the success or
failure. Students can practice in same or harder way by abandoning all
attachment to success or failure. Yoga can build this power
into them (Verse 2:48). One who is unattached to the fruits of his work and who
works as he is obligated is in the renounced order of life, and he is the true
mystic, as opposed to the one who lights no fire and performs no duty (Verse
6:01). How to perform Yoga to achieve physical strength?
A process to build Concentration: To practice yoga, one should go to a secluded
place and sit down on a seat, which should not be too high nor too low
(Verse 6:11). One should hold one’s body, neck and head erect in a straight
line and stare steadily at the tip of the nose. Sitting and concentrating
the mind on a single object, controlling the thoughts and the
activities of the senses (Verse 6:12). Hold the waist, spine, chest, neck, and
head erect, Motionless and steady, fix the eyes and the
mind, Steadily between the eyebrows, and do not look around (Verse 6:13)
Habits: Habits of students can serious effects to the
practicing Yoga and subsequently meditation. Students need to
change the unhealthy habits to get the more impact of yoga. There is no
possibility of ones to have control, if one eats too much or eats too little, sleeps
too much or does not sleep enough (Verse 6:17).
Respect: Finally, the respect, which is the most important
part of the learning. One with full
respect attentively focused and can obtain the knowledge
(Verse 4:39). If there is no respect towards the teacher, towards the subject,
it is very difficult to learn. Interest is a form of respect. Showing respect
for the objects in the learning environment will help to grow the interest,
eventually one will start understanding and it is the beginning of learning
& knowledge.
